Fertile fronds (their appearance led to the common name pearl fern)
Gametophyte ( prothallium ) of Onoclea sensibilis , whose flat thallus is on the ground. The sporophyte begins to grow on it.

Onoclea sensibilis grows as a deciduous, perennial herbaceous plant and reaches heights of 30 to 90 centimeters. The species has a long creeping rhizome as a storage and persistence organ . The long-stalked and widely overhanging sterile fronds stand alone or few together and are yellow-green in color. The blade is pinnate with networked nerves, but often pinnate at the base . It is leathery in consistency. The feather sections have a triangular shape. The upright fertile fronds are shorter than the sterile fronds. The blade is double pinnate, with the feathers curling up spherically around the sori . It spreads via spores and the rhizome.

Occurrence

The natural range of Onoclea sensibilis is eastern North America and eastern Asia . In Germany there are some neophytic occurrences in Berlin, Braunschweig and in the western Ruhr area, which originate from naturalization.

The species prefers moist forests and ditch edges as locations. It can also be found near streams, in damp meadows and around springs.

Although Onoclea sensibilis belongs to the hardiness zone = USDA climate zone 2, it is sensitive to late frost .

use

The pearl fern is occasionally used as an ornamental plant in groups of trees and wet meadows. He has been in culture since around 1799. The new growth is generally considered to be attractive. The red-stemmed pearl fern variety is known, which is characterized by red leaf stalks.
