history

Due to its strategic location, the place was repeatedly a theater of war during the Somali rebellion (1986-1992) against Siad Barre and served as a military base for troops of the Somali National Army (SNA) . In 1989 fighting between government forces and Somali National Movement (SNM) militias broke out in the city . Landmines from this conflict still make it difficult to transport goods or the expansion of roads and paths in the region.

Known residents

Mohammed Haji Ibrahim Egal (1928–2002), two-time Prime Minister of Somalia and second President of Somaliland.
