The SC Opel Rüsselsheim is a football club with almost 500 members from Rüsselsheim am Main . It was founded in 1906 as SC Borussia Rüsselsheim and has had its current name since 1928. In the 1930s and during the Second World War, the first soccer team played in the Gauliga Südwest and thus in the top division. In 1965, the SC Opel managed to return to higher-class football and the team was able to stay in the second-class Regionalliga Süd for a few years , but relegation in 1972 was followed by a fall into the lower divisions of the Darmstadt / Groß-Gerau football district. In the mid-1990s, a women's football department was founded at SC Opel.

The club today

The club currently plays with the first men's team in the eight-class regional league. The 2nd men's team plays in the district league B.

The first women's team plays in the fourth-class Oberliga Hessen, where the runner-up was reached for the eighth time in nine years in the 2019/2020 season. In the 2015/16 season, the club played in the third-class Regionalliga Süd, but had to be relegated as a promoted player. The team previously played for five years in the Oberliga Hessen, where it was runner-up four times in a row (2014/15 so far 2011/12). In the 2014/15 season, 2nd place was enough for promotion to the Regionalliga Süd, as master SV Glasseszell waived his right to promotion. The second women's team plays for points in the group league.

The SC Opel Rüsselsheim has been playing its home games at the new club area Am Sommerdamm 8 since April 1, 2015, where two artificial turf pitches are available. On special occasions, games are played in the adjacent 8,000-seat stadium on Sommerdamm ("Opel Stadium").

history

The club was founded on August 12, 1906 as Sport Club Borussia 06 , and in 1928 it was renamed Sport Club Opel 06 eV Rüsselsheim .

In 1935, SC Opel Rüsselsheim rose for the first time in the Gauliga Südwest , the top division in the German Reich, but was relegated as a newcomer in the first year. Even after the rise in 1937 and 1939, the team could only occupy the last place in the table. Only towards the end of the war was it possible to establish oneself in the Gauliga Hessen-Nassau , which had meanwhile been created, from 1941 .

After the Second World War, SC Opel achieved promotion to the Amateur League Hessen , the predecessor league of today's Oberliga Hessen, after several attempts . Here they won the championship straight away in 1965 and with coach Erich Bäumler rose to the Regionalliga Süd , which they belonged to until 1972. In the first round in 1965/66 , the players Helmut Kleinböhl and Friedel Späth were top performers in the Opel-Elf, which finished tenth at the end of the round. Karl-Heinz Kamp , who moved to the Bundesliga for Werder Bremen in the summer of 1970, was the young talent in the Rüsselsheim team. In 1966 Heinz Crawatzo from Karlsruher SC was added to the midfield. In the rounds of 1967/68 and 1968/69 Otto Barić held the position of coach, in the round of 1969/70 the team was coached by Bert Trautmann . Before the 1971/72 round , Wolfgang Kaniber (formerly VfL Osnabrück ) from Racing Strasbourg came to Rüsselsheim as a new addition for the attack . After relegation from the regional league, the club was economically at an end. The bankruptcy filed with the local court, which would have resulted in the dissolution of the association, was not carried out due to a formal error. In the following years, the path of the SC Opel Rüsselsheim led down to the district league A.

Relationship with Opel

In April 1928 an extraordinary general meeting passed the resolution to change the name from Sportclub Borussia 06 to Sport-Club Opel 06 Rüsselsheim . It was documented that the majority of the players were employed in the large plant. The hope for better financial support from the Opel company was not fulfilled to the extent desired, although the colors were black and yellow and Heinrich von Opel won as a member.

At the end of 1937, the club's name was to be changed because a company sports association had been founded at the Opel company that was to be called Opel. The sports club was able to prevent the withdrawal of the name because it was an independent name that had not been given by the company. In 1940, at a general meeting, an application was made to form an association with the Opel company sports association. After hard and emotional discussions it was agreed to postpone the application until the end of the war.

On February 9, 1950, the management of the Opel company handed over the refurbished Opel sports field, which was on the road to Bischofsheim near the forge, to SC Opel. From 1961, the Opel company provided SC Opel with a bus with a driver for its away games.

At the general meeting in the Hotel Adler in May 1968, the request was made to change the name of the association, as the Opel company did not support the association sufficiently. After a long discussion, the application was withdrawn.

For almost the whole of 1972, the association had a dispute with the German radio and television companies because they did not mention the full name of SC Opel in broadcasts, but only spoke of SC Rüsselsheim, apparently because they wanted to prevent advertising for the Opel company. SC Opel received support from, among others, SV Bayer 04 Leverkusen, which only appeared as SV 04 Leverkusen. They went so far as to deny radio and television companies access to home games.

On February 25, 1990, SC Opel played a charity game in front of 7,000 spectators in the stadium on the occasion of the S-Bahn accident in Rüsselsheim , in which 17 people died and many were seriously injured, including the chairman of SC Opel, Peter Wagner. The proceeds amounted to 70,000 DM for hardship cases of the victims and their relatives. The Bayern Munich , then advertising partner of Adam Opel AG, won 7: 2nd
