Open Document Format Alliance

The Open Document Format Alliance is an association for the propagation of the open document format based in Washington, DC.

It was founded on March 3, 2006 by 36 companies and in mid-July 2006 had 277 members and in June 2007 412 members in over 50 countries. The most important IT companies in the alliance are IBM , Oracle , Sun Microsystems and Google . There are also Novell , Opera , Red Hat and other well-known names. The Massachusetts High Tech Council and the Massachusetts Network Communications Council are also involved.

Above all, the ODF Alliance wants to convince governments and authorities to use the OASIS Open Document Format for Office Applications defined by OASIS in the future .

She supported the standardization process for the Open Document Format at the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) (draft ISO / IEC DIS 26300). The format has now been certified by ISO. It is already used by many governments.

As a kind of counterweight, Microsoft founded the Open XML Formats Developer Group together with Apple , Intel and Toshiba in order to promote its own Open XML development .
