The Opisthocentridae are a fish family from the group of eel mother relatives (Zoarcales). All twelve species in the group are bottom-dwelling marine fish found in the cool waters of the northwest or eastern Pacific.

features

The body of the Opisthocentridae is elongated and in most cases relatively high. The number of vertebrae is 52 to 72. The different types of Opisthocentridae are 5.5 to 46 cm long. The head has no skin flaps or other skin protrusions. The anal fin has one or two fin spines. The pectoral fins are large; the number of pectoral fin rays is 12 to 21. The pelvic fins can be small, with one hard and three soft rays, or are rudimentary or completely absent ( Kasatkia also has no pelvic girdle). The head can be scaled, scaly or only the cheeks are scaled. The number of Branchiostegal rays is five or six. The canals of the lateral line system on the head are well developed. On the body there is a mediolateral line of neuromasts and a dorsal one.

Almost nothing is known about the way of life of the Opisthocentridae.

Systematics

The Opisthocentridae were scientifically introduced in 1898 as a subfamily of the spine backs (Stichaeidae) by the American ichthyologists David Starr Jordan and Barton Warren Evermann . In 2015, the Russian scientist OA Radchenko made the Opisthocentridae an independent family after he determined with the help of molecular biological data that they are more closely related to the butterfish (Pholidae) than to the spine backs. This was adopted in the Catalog of Fishes in mid-2018.
