Optimol Ölwerke (short: Optimolwerke ; completely: Optimol Ölwerke Industrie GmbH ) is the name of a former mineral oil company for the refinement of mineral oil into lubricating oils . It was based in the Munich district of Berg am Laim in the immediate vicinity of Munich's Ostbahnhof .

history

The plants were founded in 1920 as a trading company for lubricants by Heinrich Maltz, a trained chemist who specialized in oils. He formed the company name from the Latin optimum oleum ( German  best oil ). In 1932 he bought the property behind the Ostbahnhof and built his first laboratory there in 1935. The Second World War marked a major turning point, but soon after the war it received a new production permit from the American military government .

From 1958, Heinrich Norbert Maltz ( photo under web links ), son of the company founder, grew into the management. He had spent professional time in the United Kingdom and interned at German automobile companies. While the founder's wife continued to take care of the finances, her son Heinrich Norbert could concentrate on the technical side. So the company continued to thrive. It was about constant optimization, automation and specialization in order to further improve the safety of the production facilities, manufacturing, product quality, filling and sales.

Heinrich Manfred Maltz, the grandson of the company founder, also entered the business. Special measuring technology was established in order to be able to better control and further increase the quality of the oils, greases and lubricating pastes produced. In 1969 the first computer was procured, which at that time filled two whole rooms in a neighboring house. Optimolwerke developed into the world market leader for high-performance lubricants and had around 150 employees in Munich and another 200 worldwide in 54 foreign branches. They supplied all kinds of industrial companies. These included motor vehicle manufacturers , newspaper printing plants , bakery factories, as well as the Federal Railways and the Federal Armed Forces .

The Optimol oil works remained in the possession of the Maltz family until 1992 when they were sold. “My father sold at the height of the company,” the grandson of the company founder praised his father's decision. The property remained in the family ownership.

From 2003 to 2018, the former factory premises served as a club area.

As a result, the former factory premises, located directly next to the famous Festmeile Kunstpark Ost (KPO), were also converted into a club and party area called optimolwerke  (picture) . This closed in January 2018 and was demolished. In its place, new cultural, office and residential buildings as well as traffic and parks in the Munich factory district are being built .
