Opuntia amyclaea is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet amyclaea means '(Greek amyclaeus) shoe-like'.
description
Opuntia amyclaea has a shrubby growth. The glauk dark green, thick, elongated to elliptical shoot sections are 30 to 40 centimeters long. The sharply pointed, red leaf rudiments on it are up to 4 millimeters long. The small areoles are covered with one or two short bristles and decrepit brownish glochids . The one to four stiff, spreading, almost vertically protruding thorns are whitish and usually shorter than 3 centimeters.
The flowers are yellow, the fruits are not juicy.
Distribution and systematics
The natural range of Opuntia amyclaea is unknown. It is cultivated in Mexico and is wild in southern Europe.
The first description was in 1826 by Michele Tenore . A nomenclature synonym is Opuntia ficus-indica var. Amyclaea (Ten.) A. Berger (1912). Opuntia amyclaea may just be a variant of Opuntia ficus-indica .
