Opuntia antillana is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet antillana means '(Latin antillanus) native to the Antilles'.

description

Opuntia antillana grows shrubby, almost creeping and forms large groups with diameters of more than 1 meter. The slightly sloping, obovate, narrow at the base shoot sections are 7 to 20 centimeters long. The leaf rudiments on it are conical to subpulate, the large areoles are covered with brown wool and the numerous glochids are yellow. The three to six unequal, strong, round, yellow thorns turn gray or white with age. They are 1 to 6 inches long.

The yellow flowers reach a length of 5 to 7 centimeters and become reddish over time. The reddish purple fruits are up to 4 inches long.

Distribution and systematics

Opuntia antillana is common in the Caribbean .

The first description was in 1918 by Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose .
