Opuntia arcei is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the Bolivian agronomist and Martín Cárdenas student, Lucio Arce.

description

Opuntia arcei grows tree-shaped, branches out above the surface of the soil and reaches heights of 1.5 to 2 meters. A clear trunk of up to 80 centimeters in height and 20 to 25 centimeters in diameter is formed. The elongated to rhomboid shoot sections are 36 to 42 centimeters long, 15 to 25 centimeters wide and 1 to 1.5 centimeters thick. The gray areoles on it are 3 to 4 centimeters apart. The dense glochids are brown. The four to seven awl, thin, differently long thorns are white. They are 0.5 to 3 inches long.

The wheel-shaped, golden yellow flowers reach a length of up to 6 centimeters and a diameter of 4 centimeters. The spherical to barrel-shaped, greenish fruits have a diameter of up to 4.5 centimeters.

Distribution and systematics

Opuntia arcei is common in Bolivia in the department of Cochabamba in the province of Cercado at altitudes from 2500 to 2800 meters.

The first description was in 1956 by Martín Cárdenas .
