Opuntia armata is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet armata means '(lat. Armatus) reinforced, bristled'.
description
Opuntia armata grows low shrubby with upright to spreading branches and forms dense thickets. The initially rotating and later flattened shoot sections are up to 3.5 centimeters long and 2 centimeters thick. The leaf rudiments on it are reddish. The glochids resemble thin thorns. The up to nine, initially protruding and then irregularly spread, reddish thorns become whitish with age. They are up to 2.5 inches long.
Nothing is known about the flowers and fruits .
Distribution and systematics
Opuntia armata is widespread in Bolivia in the Oruro department at altitudes of 3600 to 3800 meters.
It was first described in 1953 by Curt Backeberg . A nomenclature synonym is Airampoa armata (Backeb.) Doweld (2002, incorrect name ICBN -Article 11.4).
The species is poorly known.
