Żarnowa is a village in the Strzyżów municipality in the Subcarpathian Voivodeship in Poland .
Geography and location
Żarnowa is located in the south of the Subcarpathian Voivodeship, east of the confluence of the Wisłok and Stobnica rivers .
history
Many new settlements emerged in Poland in the first half of the 15th century. It can be assumed that Żarnowa at the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries. Century. It is documented that a certain Mikołaj von Pietraszówka bought the place in 1433 and in 1536 the place passed to Mikołaj Machowski. The strategically favorable location at the intersection of Wisłok and Stobnica, especially in the 17th and 18th centuries, repeatedly led to devastating battles taking place on the soil of Żarnowa.
On July 28, 1944, the residents of the village successfully defended the railway bridge against the retreating Germans. It was saved from destruction in this way. There is a two-day military picnic in Żarnowa every year to commemorate the fighting on July 28, 1944. The inhabitants of Żarnowa were awarded the Polish Cross of Valor for securing the crossing at Wisłok. The place was incorporated into the urban and rural municipality Strzyżów in 1998 . From 1975 to 1998 the place was administratively part of the Rzeszów Voivodeship .
Attractions
- A wayside shrine has survived from the 17th century, commemorating the battles that took place in Żarnowa.
- There is a two-day military picnic in Żarnowa every year to commemorate the fighting on July 28, 1944. The battle scenes of the inhabitants of Żarnowa are re-enacted against German troops.
- Next to the railway bridge there is a memorial plaque that was placed there in 1969. It commemorates both the defense of the bridge in 1944 and the battle of Tannenberg .
