history
The name of the river was first mentioned towards the end of the 14th century (1372 Visloka , around 1390 Wislok , 1410 Wyslok ). It is related to the names Wisła ( Vistula ) and Wisłoka and is derived from the proto-Indo-European veis (something liquid). In the German-language Schöffenbuch of the village Krzemienica the river was mentioned as [the] Weislok , Weyslog , Weyszlock and Weyszlog . Similarly, some tributaries were mentioned under German surnames, e.g. B. Ropny potok in 1518 as Rathkow . The German name forms have not been used for a long time.
In the Middle Ages (until 1340) the river (from about the height of Krosno to Rzeszów , the border ran along the Jasiołka to the south ) formed the approximate borderline between the Kingdom of Poland and the Principality of Halych-Volodymyr , then the border between the landscapes within Poland Lesser Poland ( Małopolska ) and Red Ruthenia ( Ruś Czerwona ).
course
Wisłok rises on the eastern slope of Mount Kanasiówka in the Low Beskids, south of Wisłok Wielki , on the border between Poland and Slovakia. The river leaves the Beskids behind after more than 20 km between Rymanów and Odrzechowa in the Sanok lowlands , where the Jezioro Sieniawskie is located. Its course turns north-westerly after Besko , flows u. a. through Haczów , Iskrzynia , Krościenko Wyżne , Krosno , Odrzykoń . At Frysztak the Wisłok changes its course to the northeast towards Strzyżów , separating the Strzyżów Mountains in the northwest and Dynów Mountains in the southeast, behind Czudec it bends to the north, then it flows through Boguchwała and Rzeszów , the capital of the voivodeship. At the height of the A4 it turns east, lets Łańcut past in the south, north of Przeworsk it bends again through Tryńcza in a northward direction. After 220 kilometers the river flows into the San at Dębno.
