Opuntia bensonii is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the American botanist Lyman Benson .

description

Opuntia bensonii grows shrubby to tree-like, richly branched near the base and forms very dense groups with heights of 2 to 4 meters. There is a well-trained trunk. The green, broadly obovate shoot sections with a reddish tinge near the areoles are up to 30 centimeters long and 20 centimeters wide. The numerous bright yellow glochids on them are 5 to 6 millimeters long. The five to nine needle-like thorns are white and have a darker tip. They reach a length of 2.2 to 3.5 centimeters. The spines arising from the lower parts of the areoles are spreading and bent back, the one to three spines of the upper parts of the areoles are protruding.

The bright yellow flowers reach a length of up to 3.5 centimeters and a diameter of 2.5 centimeters. The reddish purple, inverted conical to pear-shaped fruits are edible. They are covered with numerous glochids and are 6 to 7 centimeters long.

Distribution and systematics

Opuntia bensonii is common in the Mexican states of Guerrero , Michoacán and Jalisco .

The first description was in 1972 by Hernándo Sánchez-Mejorada .
