Halmstad – Nässjö railway line to Halmstad

The Landeryd – Falköping railway was a standard-gauge Swedish railway line . It was built by Västra Centralbanans Järnvägsaktiebolag (VCJ), a private railway company , between Landeryd and Falköping .

In Sweden, in the second half of the 1800s, numerous rail lines in the Halmstad region were discussed. Several requested concessions were rejected for various reasons. However, on October 11, 1901, an application for a standard-gauge rail connection between Falköping Ranten on Västra stambanan and Landeryd on the Halmstad – Nässjö railway line was approved .

In May 1902 a meeting was held in Halmstad, at which a report was made. There A. Qvistgaard was commissioned to create plans and cost estimates for the planned route. The cost was estimated by him at 5.326 million crowns . The constituent meeting of Västra Centralbanans Järnvägsaktiebolag (VCJ) took place on April 28, 1903. Halmstad – Nässjö Järnvägsaktiebolag acquired the largest share of the shares .

The plans provided for the Ulricehamn – Åsarp section of the Ulricehamn – Vartofta line of Ulricehamns Järnväg, which had existed since December 4, 1874 , to be converted to standard gauge and integrated into the new line. In 1903 the VCJ took over this section for 710,000 crowns. The eight-kilometer remnant Åsarp – Vartofta was also converted to standard gauge and then sold for 300,000 kroner to Tidaholms Järnväg (TJ), which began operations there on October 28, 1907 and finally ceased on November 16, 1918.

New cost calculations showed that the route would be more expensive than pre-calculated. Therefore, an application was made to the HNJ for further loans, which they also granted. However, the VCJ had to deposit mortgages as security. The HNJ guaranteed this for three million crowns. The contracts for this were signed on November 24, 1903 and contained an agreement according to which the HNJ provided rolling stock and personnel for the new route.

The 129.672 kilometer long route was opened on December 21, 1906, with rails weighing 30 kg / m per meter being laid. When it opened, the maximum speed was 70 km / h. Shortly after the opening, it was determined that rail operations would also require higher costs than planned. The HJN was again asked for further loans. At the end of 1913 the VCJ owed the HNJ to 1.925 million crowns. At the end of 1915 it became clear that the company could no longer meet its payment obligations. At the company's last general meeting on February 7, 1916, the bankruptcy petition was resolved. On January 1, 1917, the line was sold at auction , where it was bought by the HNJ for 2,943,863 crowns and 33 ore.

From this point on, the VCJ was managed by the HNJ, but remained an independent company until January 1, 1923. Then the VCJ was integrated into the HNJ. With the integration of Västra Centralbanan , the HNJ's route network had reached its greatest expansion at 411 kilometers.

nationalization

As part of the general nationalization of the railway , the HJN and with it the Landeryd – Falköping line became state-owned on July 1, 1945, with Statens Järnvägar taking over management .

Operational settings

Due to the increasing individual traffic and the relocation of goods traffic to the road, a large part of the route had to be closed. In the last years of operation, the freight traffic was taken care of from Limmared .

The Falköping – Limmared section was dismantled in 1991. In 1996 a scrap dealership began in Ekefors with the reuse of the remaining rail line between Burseryd and Ekefors to transfer locomotives to the company for dismantling. In August 2003, the Museiföreningen Västra Centralbanans Järnväg was founded to operate museum railways on the route between Limmared and Landeryd. However, this could not prevent the dismantling of the Ambjörnarp – Limmared line in 2004.

Current operation

On the Landeryd – Smålands Burseryd route, freight wagons were delivered on weekdays as restricted voyages. These transfer trains were driven by Green Cargo with diesel locomotives of the T44 series . Sporadically, the scrap dealer in Ekefors was also served on the route between Burseryd and Ekefors, which Trafikverket had designated as “nedlagt” (= closed).

The railway line has been completely without traffic since 2014. During a special railcar trip in 2015, the travelers no longer reached Smålands Burseryd station, as the industrial company on both sides of the station was allowed by Trafikverket to cover the tracks with a mat to improve internal transport. There were no more transfers to Ekefors after 2013, as derailments had occurred due to the poor track condition. Furthermore, Trafikverket announced that after the timetable change on December 10, 2017, the route to Burseryd could no longer be used. From this point on, the line will be listed under “Underhåll har upphört” and can be closed for good after another three years.

The Sjötofta – Ambjörnarp section can be ridden with bicycle trolleys. The municipal company Ambjörnarps Byalag operates the rental station in the Ambjörnarp station building.
