Opuntia durangensis is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet durangensis means 'from the location Durango in Mexico'.

description

Opuntia durangensis grows like a tree. The light green, sometimes bare, broadly obovate shoot sections are up to 20 centimeters long and up to 16 centimeters wide. The numerous raised areoles are far apart. The dark glochids are 2 to 3 millimeters long. The three to five pungent, yellow thorns darken with age and are up to 1.5 centimeters long.

The yellow flowers are up to 5 centimeters long. The fruits are probably red.

Distribution and systematics

Opuntia durangensis is common in the Mexican states of Durango , Jalisco and Zacatecas .

The first description was in 1908 by Joseph Nelson Rose .
