Around the 2 to 4.5 apart elliptical areoles , the olive-green shoot sections are usually a little reddish. The numerous glochids are brown to yellow ocher. The thorns are initially light brown, later they become dark brown or gray with a brown tip. They are stiff, needle-like, flattened at their base and twisting above. The thorns are 0.5 to 4.5 centimeters (rarely up to 7 centimeters) long.

The bell-shaped, bright yellow flowers reach lengths of 4.5 to 9 centimeters and diameters of 4 to 8 centimeters. Your pericarpel is sometimes a little humped. The fruits are obovate and have a truncated tip.
