Opuntia pilifera is a species in the genus of Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the family of the cactus (Cactaceae). The specific epithet pilifera means 'bearing hair, hairy'. Trivial names are “Cocoche Loco”, “Nopal Crinado” and “Nopal de Crines”.

Opuntia pilifera grows tree-shaped with ascending branches and reaches heights of 1.5 to 5 meters. The obovate to almost circular, green, bare shoot sections are 12 to 35 centimeters long and 15 to 20 centimeters wide. They have noticeable bumps when young. The areoles are covered with sparse to numerous, silky, white to yellow hairs 1 to 3 centimeters in length. The yellowish to whitish 2 to 9  thorns turn black with age. They are needle-like or weakly sub-like and 1 to 2.2 inches long.

The pink to reddish purple colored flowers reach lengths between 4.2 and 6 centimeters. The spherical, red fruits are edible. They are set with thorns, hair and glochids.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Opuntia pilifera is common in the Mexican states of Puebla , Tlaxcala and Oaxaca at altitudes of 900 to 1800 meters. The first description was published in 1898 by Frédéric Albert Constantin Weber .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
