Opuntia tuna is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet tuna means 'homeland name (Central America)'.

description

Opuntia tuna grows shrubby with several branches and reaches a height of up to 1 meter. The inverted egg-shaped to elongated shoot sections are light green and 8 to 10 (rarely 16) centimeters long. The small leaves fall off early. The large areoles have yellow glochids and 2 to 6 slightly spread pale yellow thorns .

The pale yellow flowers have a reddish hue and reach a diameter of up to 5 centimeters. The red fruits are inverted egg-shaped and have a diameter of up to 3 centimeters.

Distribution and systematics

Opuntia tuna is common in the Dominican Republic , Jamaica and other Caribbean islands.

The first description according to the rules of binary nomenclature was in Species Plantarum as Cactus tuna by Carl von Linné . Philip Miller assigned it in 1768 to the genus Opuntia established by him .
