Opuntia velutina is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet velutina means '(Latin velutinus) velvety'.

description

Opuntia velutina grows shrubby to tree-shaped with ascending branches and reaches heights of 1 to 4 meters. A trunk 20 to 80 centimeters high is formed. The green to yellowish green, densely downy, narrow to wide obovate or sometimes more or less circular shoot sections are 15 to 26 centimeters long and 14 to 20 centimeters wide. The white areoles have abundant yellowish red glochids . The two to six slightly awl, straight, spreading or slightly recurved thorns are whitish yellow. They are 1 to 4 inches long.

The yellow flowers are 3 to 5 inches long. The spherical red fruits are downy and covered with glochids. They are 3 to 3.2 inches long and 2.5 to 3 inches in diameter.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Opuntia velutina is common in the Mexican states of Guerrero , Morelos , Puebla and Oaxaca at altitudes of 1100 to 1900 meters.

The first description by Frédéric Albert Constantin Weber was published in 1904.

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is called " Data Deficient (DD) ", i. H. with insufficient data. The future development of the populations is unknown.
