Opuntia wilcoxii is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the discoverer of the plant Glover B. Wilcox .

description

Opuntia wilcoxii grows as a shrub and forms large bushes with numerous branches that reach heights of 1 to 2 meters. The dark green, thin, downy, elongated shoot sections have a slightly purple halo around the areoles. They are up to eight inches long. The large areoles are far apart and have numerous long yellow glochids . The one to three white to slightly yellow thorns are up to 5 centimeters long. A thorn is particularly long.

The yellow flowers reach a length of up to 6 centimeters. The pear-shaped fruits are fluffy and not thorny. They are up to 4 centimeters long and 3 centimeters in diameter.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Opuntia wilcoxii is distributed in Mexico along the Pacific coast from the state of Sonora to the state of Jalisco up to altitudes of 600 meters.

The first description by Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose was published in 1919.

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
