history

In 1827 the originally pure male choir was founded as a Liederkranz in 1827 Ravensburg by 17 singers and 50 passive members. Along with the Ravensburg Rifle Guild, it is the oldest active association in the city and the oldest choral society in the Association of Oberschwäbischer Sängergau 1855 e. V.

Program of the song festival 1841

The choral society was considered national and liberal; During the pre-March period it consisted mainly of Protestant merchants, manufacturers and officials. A first major appearance took place at a Schiller memorial service in 1828; in the next ten years, however, the life of the association almost fell asleep again and the number of members declined. Around 1838, however, the association gained new momentum, and in 1841 the song wreath, as the highlight of its early association history, held a large song festival in Ravensburg attended by numerous foreign choral associations with over 800 people, at which the association chairman and city councilor Karl Friedrich Zaisser (later the Ravensburger Stadtschultheiß) gave a widely acclaimed political speech in which he called for a German federation based on the Swiss model. In response to his liberal speech, however, he was pressured to resign from the association's chairmanship.

When the concert hall was rebuilt, a rehearsal room was created with the Liederkranzsaal , in which the choir rehearses every week after interludes at other locations. Through an agreement with the main donor of the Konzerthaus Julius Spohn , the city of Ravensburg and the Liederkranz, the choir was awarded the hall “for all times”.

In the first decade of the 20th century the choir sang repeatedly in guest performances by the Stuttgart Court Opera in the Ravensburg Konzerthaus. During one of these performances in 1907, the beautiful tenor voice of choir member Karl Erb was discovered, who then made a brilliant career as an opera tenor in Stuttgart, Lübeck and Munich.

In 1925 a separate women's choir was founded, which later merged with the men's choir.

In 1933, the choir has been within the meaning of National Socialism " into line ". In 1945 it was dissolved by the French occupiers, but was re-established in 1946.

In 1971 the association was renamed Oratorienchor Liederkranz Ravensburg e. V. 1827 .
