Orazio Mattei (Cardinal)
Orazio Mattei (* 1621 in Rome , † January 18, 1688 ibid) was an Italian cardinal of the Roman Church .
Life
He came from the family of the Dukes of Paganica. Orazio Mattei obtained the degree of Doctor iuris utriusque . During the pontificate of Innocent X , he was appointed papal house prelate and governor of Orvieto and Camerino. He served as a judge in the Courts of Justice of the Apostolic Signature . Around 1670 Orazio Mattei was vice-delegate in Avignon, in 1672 he met as an auditor of the Roman Rota . He was also prefect of the Apostolic Palace . On June 17, 1675 he was appointed titular archbishop of Damascus , nothing is known about the reception of the orders . Orazio Mattei was a canon of the Lateran Basilica . On June 28, 1675 he was awarded the title of Papal Assistant to the Throne .
In the consistory of September 2, 1686 , Pope Innocent XI. him as a cardinal priest in the college of cardinals . He received the red hat and San Lorenzo in Panisperna as the titular church on September 30 of the same year.
Orazio Mattei died in Rome on January 18, 1688 around 6 p.m. He was buried in the church of San Francesco a Ripa in a family grave.
