Order of the Mirror

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Order of the Mirror , also Order of the Mirror or Order of the Mirror of the Virgin Mary, was a Spanish knightly order . It was donated by Infant Ferdinand of Castile in 1410. The occasion was the victory in Antequera over the Moors .

The order chain consisted of griffins alternating with lilies. The religious clothing was a white outer garment with a black cross over black undergarments . A mirror carried by the knights was possibly eponymous and was seen as effeminate and led to ridicule.

The existence of the order is not considered certain. Ferdinand von Biedenfeld remarked in 1841 that "there are noticeable doubts about its existence, because no historical evidence is given anywhere". Karl Julius Weber leads the order in his work Das Ritter-Wesen und die Templer (1822/24) in the section "Obsolete and uncertain orders".
