history

The city has been of great importance to the region since the Middle Ages. At times the capital of a small sultanate, it was mostly an important administrative center in changing empires. In the 18th century Ordubad was the capital of the Āzā-Jerān district of the Persian-dependent Nakhichevan khanate . In 1828 the city and the khanate fell to the Russian Empire . Even today, the city is one of the most important in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.

Three mosques from the 17th and 18th centuries have been preserved in the city: Saatabad, Dilbar and Juma, the last one also houses a madrasa . There is also a historical museum dedicated in particular to the astronomer and mathematician Nasraddin Tusi .

traffic

The city had had a train station since 1941 on the Ələt – Culfa railway line that was opened at the time . Due to the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh that broke out when the Soviet Union was dissolved , traffic to Baku was interrupted several times from 1989, resumed depending on the military situation, but then finally stopped. Later there should have been rail traffic between Ordubad and Naxçıvan at times.
