Oreophryne biroi is a species of amphibian from the subfamily of the Papuan narrow-mouth frogs (Asterophryidae).

features

The species reaches a length of 25 millimeters. The upper side of the body is yellowish-red and very finely and densely dotted, so that the upper side, the upper eyelids, the forehead and especially the interorbital space appear almost black. The shoulder area is dark. The limbs show traces of dark transverse bandages. The fingers and toes are curled light and dark. The underside of the body is light reddish brown and dusted dark brown. The body shape is similar to that of the genus Rana . The head is big. The front head is short. The Canthus rostralis is steep. The rein region drops off steeply and is as long as the diameter of the eye. The interorbital space is one and third times as wide as an upper eyelid. The eardrum is indistinct and barely a third as wide as the diameter of the eye. The first finger is significantly shorter than the second. The fifth toe is longer than the third. The toes show a very small trace of webbing . The adhesive discs on the fingertips are moderately large and slightly larger than those on the toes. There are no subarticular cusps or metatarsal cusps . When the hind leg is pushed forward against the body, the tibiotarsal joint extends to the front edge of the eye. The skin is smooth and pebbled only on the back abdomen and on the back and bottom of the thighs. There is a very fine fold of skin along the midline of the back.

Occurrence

Oreophryne biroi occurs in New Guinea along the north coast of Madang , Madang Province , Papua New Guinea including Kairuru Island up to the Cyclops Mountains near Jayapura , Papua , Indonesia at altitudes up to 1000 meters. The species lives in lowland rainforests and secondary forests .

Systematics

Oreophryne biroi was first described as Sphenophryne biroi by Lajos Méhelÿ in 1897 . Pieter Nicolaas van Kampen placed the species in the genus Oreophryne in 1919 .

Oreophryne biroi is classified as “Least Concern” by the IUCN .
