Orest Iwanowytsch Lewyzkyj (born December 25, 1848 July / January 6,  1849 greg. In Majachka , Poltava Governorate , Russian Empire ; †  May 9, 1922 in Drabiw , Cherkassy Oblast , Ukrainian SSR ) was a Ukrainian historian, ethnologist and writer. In 1922 he was president of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences .

Life

Orest Lewyzkyj was born into an old priestly family as the son of a deacon. Between 1859 and 1869 he first attended an Orthodox school and then the Theological Seminary in Poltava . As the best student, he was recommended to study at the Theological Academy, but he decided to study law at St. Vladimir University and then to study history at the university's historical and philological faculty, which he graduated in 1874. After completing his studies, he worked as a teacher at a secondary school in Kiev, was a member of several scientific societies in Ukraine and researched and published archival materials on Ukrainian history from the 16th to 18th centuries.

In November 1918 he was one of the founders of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences and was initially secretary and from 1920 chairman of the socio-economic department of the academy. From December 19, 1919 he was Vice President and from March 27, 1922 President of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences.

Orest Levyzkyj died at the age of 73 in the village of Drabiw in today's Cherkassy Oblast and was buried there too.

He was the author of over 200 academic papers on the history, law and ethnography of Ukraine from the 16th to 19th centuries.
