Orestes Marengo

Oresto Marengo SDB (born August 28, 1906 in Le Cecche near Diano d'Alba , Cuneo Province, Piedmont, † July 30, 1998 in Tura , India) was an Italian religious priest , missionary in Assam and the first bishop in the Garo Hills .

Life

After joining the religious community of the Salesians of Don Bosco and completing his studies in philosophy and theology, he was ordained a priest on April 2, 1932. On July 12, 1951, he was appointed Bishop of Dibrugarh , India. The consecration took place on December 27, 1951. On July 6, 1964, he was transferred to the Tezpur diocese . Finally, on June 26, 1969, he was appointed Apostolic Administrator of Tura, associated with the titular diocese of Arsacal . He held this office until January 12, 1979.

Marengo spoke more than twenty regional languages ​​and is considered a pioneer in health care and education, particularly in the hinterland of the Garo Hills. He died in a reputation for holiness. The canonization process was opened in 2007 by Archbishop Dominic Jala of Shillong .
