The Orient Beach State Park is a state park in the municipality of Town of Southold in Suffolk County (New York) , New York , United States. The park covers an area of 363 acres (1.47 km²) and is located at the tip of the North Fork of Long Island .

Long Beach , in the park area, was declared a National Natural Landmark in 1980 . The peninsula is a 2.5 mi (4 km) long spit on which the succession of salt marshes to stocks of Virginian juniper (red cedar) can be clearly traced.

The Orient Long Beach Bar Light (Bug Light) is also located in the park area .

geography

The Long Beach spit protrudes from the northeast end of the North Fork to the southwest into Gardiners Bay . The water surface between the spit and the Orient is also known as the Peconic River and can be counted in the broadest sense of the river's estuary, although the river comes from the west, from Calverton . The spit more and more closes the northern arm of the river ( Peconic River Little Bay , Long Beach Bay ) from the sea and will possibly connect to the island of Shelter Island in geological time . To the northeast of the park is a landing stage for the Cross Sund Ferry .

A state parkway runs along the spit to Bens Point approximately in the middle of the spit. The southwestern tip of the spit is called Long Beach Point and a little further southeast, almost halfway to Cornelius Point on Shelter Island, is the Orient Long Beach Bar Light .

Freetime activities

The park offers 45,000 ft (14 km / 8.5 mi) of coastline on either side of the narrow strip of sand. There is a beach, picnic facilities, a playground and a nature trail, as well as opportunities for hiking, cycling and fishing. Camping is not allowed.

Restrictions on boats

Since 1997 it has been illegal to moor with boats on the coast of the park so that the endangered bird species, such as the yellow-footed plover , and the special plant communities enjoy adequate protection.

Flora and fauna

There are nesting areas for common tern and rose tern , as well as sea grass meadows in the adjacent bays.
