Amsterdam Beach State Park is a state park on the Atlantic Ocean in the municipality of East Hampton in Suffolk County , New York , United States. The park covers an area of ​​199 acres (80.5 hectares) and extends east of Montauk on Long Island . The area is also known as the Amsterdam Beach Preserve .

history

The area was originally called Montauk Moorlands and was privately owned before New York State bought 122 acres (49 hectares) in 2005. The property was purchased for $ 16.5 million, of which East Hampton raised $ 6 million, Suffolk County $ 5.5 million, New York State $ 4 million, and federal funds raised $ 1 million.

At the time of acquisition, the area was the largest contiguous vacant and unprotected area in Montauk. In addition, 77 acres (31 ha) were acquired in 2008.

The property is jointly owned by New York State, the Town of East Hampton and Suffolk County.

geography

The park is located between Shadmoor State Park and the Andy Warhol Preserve of the Nature Conservancy . The park was established to preserve the valuable habitat. Together with Montauk Point State Park , Camp Hero State Park and Montauk County Park , it is part of a network of protected areas that protect the eastern tip of Long Island. The park protects a coastline of 1,288 ft (393 m) in length and has several ponds and 54 acres (22 hectares) of mudflats and marshland.

Fauna & flora

The area is wooded. The main tree species are rock pear ( Amelanchier , shadbush), blueberry bushes ( Vaccinium corymbosum , blueberry), black cherry ( Prunus serotina , black cherry), viburnum ( Viburnum dentatum , arrowwood) and various Ilex TYPES (holly). The area is home to several endangered animal species: hen harrier , pothole turtle and round-tailed curb . In addition, the area is an important resting area for migratory birds that migrate along the Atlantic Flyway . Several species of amphibians can be found in the wetlands, including the blue-spotted cross-toothed newt .

Freetime activities

The park serves primarily for nature conservation, so it is primarily dedicated to nature observation. To this end, a network of hiking trails was established in 2011.
