Battle Island State Park is a state park in the parish of Fulton in Oswego County , New York , United States. The park covers an area of 235 acres (95.1 hectares) and is directly connected to the 18-hole Battle Island State Park Golf Course .

geography

The park is located on the west bank of the Oswego River , north of Fulton, Oswego County on New York State Highway 48 . The property is on a curve in the river, directly across from the mouth of Black Creek . The Oswego River flows north to Lake Ontario and is divided by a canal north of the park, where Battle Island lies along with other smaller islands in the stream. The terrain is only very slightly hilly. The golf course faces New York State Highway 48 , while the undeveloped portion of the park extends east to the banks of the Oswego.

history

The name "Battle Island" refers to a battle that took place on July 3, 1756, during the French and Indian War , on the island of the same name. A British fleet was on its way back from Fort Ontario when it was ambushed by a group of French and Indians . Although the "British and Colonial Forces" were outnumbered, they were able to repel some attacks by using the island as a position. The island, now known as the Battle Island, was created through the creation of the adjacent canal, while the battle took place on a smaller island to the south of it.

The park property originally belonged to Frederick A. Emerick, who donated 200 acres to the state in 1916. When the rest of his property fell to the state in 1938, the land was officially set up as a park.

Freetime activities

The park’s main attraction is the 18-hole, par 72 golf course designed by Devereux Emmett. There are also some hiking trails and ski trails as well as a restaurant.
