Web anime
Web Anime ( Japanese Web ア ニ メ ), also: Original Net Animation or Original Net Anime ( ONA for short ), is a term for anime that is first published on the Internet.
The term Original Net Anime ( オ リ ジ ナ ル ネ ッ ト ア ニ メ ) was coined by the website for the anime Lingerie Senshi Papillon Rose , which was an erotic parody of the magical girl genre. Outside of Japan, this term was recorded as the Original Net Animation . The expression was formed in analogy to original video animation , which refers to anime that are first published as video (on LD , VHS , DVD , HD DVD , Blu-ray or other video data carriers). Like OVAs, ONAs are in many cases series with a small number of episodes or single films and can form the continuation or prehistory of a television production, but can also be independent projects.
Anime-style animations have been on the Internet for a long time, but these are non-commercial fan productions in the form of GIF or Flash animations. The distribution of professional animations as streaming media in television quality over the network was only possible due to the increasing number of broadband and fiber optic connections. An early example of this is the web anime for Azumanga Daioh , which was streamed on December 28, 2000.
