Azumanga Daioh ( Japanese あ ず ま ん が 大王 , Azumanga Daiō , dt. About "The great King Azumanga") is a Yonkoma - Manga series by the Japanese artist Kiyohiko Azuma . The comedy manga, which is about the everyday school life of some Japanese high school students and their teachers, was published from 1999 to 2002 and comprises around 600 pages and was continued in 2009. It was also filmed as an anime television series.

Tomo Takino ( 滝 野 智 ), Koyomi “Yomi” Mizuhara ( 水 原 暦 ) and Sakaki ( 榊 ), all of whom are in the same class, will begin their first year at high school . Tomo and Yomi have been in the same class since elementary school and, despite frequent differences of opinion, are friends. While Tomo shows her affection through jokes, silliness, and malicious glee, Yomi is dutiful, mature, and one of the best in the class at school. Although Sakaki is known for her athletic talent, her calm and mysterious demeanor, she has a penchant for cute things, especially cats. The girls' class teacher is the unusual English teacher Yukari Tanizaki, who uses unconventional methods and maintains relatively close relationships with her class.

Ten-year-old Chiyo Mihama ( 美 浜 ち よ ) joins them. She skipped five grades and is still top of the class. Even though she is extremely smart and responsible for her age, she still has the naivety, desires, and especially fears of a child. She befriends Tomo, Yomi and Sakaki.

Also during the current school year Ayumu Kasuga ( 春日 歩 ) joins the class that moved from Osaka to Tokyo and is therefore given the nickname "Osaka" ( 大阪 , Ōsaka ), with which they address the teachers themselves. Osaka, who befriends the four other girls, often behaves very slowly, tired and lost in her own world.

Chiyo's parents are rich and own a vacation home. The five girls decide to spend some time there during the holidays. They are accompanied by their class teacher and the sports teacher Minamo "Nyamo" Kurosawa ( 黒 沢 み な も ), who have been friends since high school and who have a similar relationship to the "Yukari-sensei" as Tomo has to Yomi. While “Nyamo” ​​takes three girls with her in her car, Yukari drives Chiyo and Osaka to the holiday home. Chiyo is trauma caused by Yukari's wild traffic style - she pays no attention to traffic signs or pedestrians, let alone traffic lights.

In the second year of high school, Yukari brings Kagura ( 神 楽 ) into the class of five girls; she befriends them. Kagura is in the swimming club and sees Sakaki as a rival, as the two usually take the best places in sports competitions at the school. Together with Tomo and Osaka, she belongs to a self-founded group for fools, the “Holzkopf Trio”, as the three mostly have below-average grades.

Running gags

  • Sakaki is very fond of cats, but they hate them. As soon as she tries to stroke a cat, she is always bitten. It wasn't until she was on a trip to Okinawa with her friends that Sakaki met an Iriomote cat that she could pet. The cat she calls Mayā (Okinawa dialect for "cat") follows Sakaki from Okinawa home. Since Sakaki's parents are allergic to cats and they cannot keep a cat as a result, Mayā lives with Chiyo for the time being.
  • A fictional franchise that appears again and again in the series is Neko Koneko - a kitten on a cat.
  • Kaorin went to class with the other girls in her first two years of high school - she loves Sakaki. In the third year she was transferred to his class by the teacher of ancient Japanese literature Kimura ( 木村 ). He openly confesses to his students that he only became a teacher because he likes high school girls. You can't see his eyes because of his glasses and his mouth is almost always open. Despite his strange obsession, he is very charitable and has a loving wife and daughter.
  • Chiyo's parents are mentioned but never shown. Instead, Sakaki dreams of a cat-like creature named "Chiyo's father". On her birthday, Osaka gives Chiyo a soft toy that looks like "Chiyo's father". It appears several times in history.

Publications

The Azumanga Daioh comic strips appeared in Japan in issues 2/1999 (= December 1998) to 5/2002 (= March 2002) in the manga magazine Comic Dengeki Daiō . The Media Works publishing house brought these comic strips in February out in 2002 in four anthologies.

The manga was also published in Canada, the United States, South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Spain, France, and Germany. The Tokyopop- Verlag published the four anthologies in German from July 2006 to January 2007. The translation is by Marcus Wehner. A new edition of the German version in two double volumes was published in April and June 2012.

In the manga magazine Get the Sun ( ゲ ッ サ ン , Gessan , also called Gekkan Shōnen Sunday ) of the Shogakukan publishing house, which was launched on May 12, 2009 (issue 6/2009), one of the works it appears is the continuation of Azumanga Daiō: Hoshūhen ( あ ず ま ん が 大王・ 補習 編 , dt. "Azumanga Daiō: Nachhilfeunterricht-Band") which ran in 3 chapters until July 12, 2009 (edition 8/2009). In addition, the revised new edition appeared in three volumes of the original manga from June 11th to August 18th, 2009, with a revised character design, changed panels and texts. This also contained Hoshūhen .

Anime

On December 28, 2000, the four-minute web anime Azumanga Web Daiō ( あ ず ま ん が Web 大王 ) was released.

In 2002, the JCStaff studio created a 26-part anime television series on the manga, directed by Hiroshi Nishikiori . The character design was created by Yasuhisa Kato and Chikako Shibatawar's artistic director. From April 9 to October 1, 2002 (after midnight and therefore on the previous TV day ), the series ran on the Japanese TV channels TV Tōkyō and TV Aichi , and shifted by half an hour on TV Osaka and one day on TVQ Kyūshū and by two days on TV Hokkaidō .

The series was broadcast in the US by The Anime Network and in the Philippines by TV5. There are also translations into Spanish, French and Dutch. In Germany, the anime was published completely on DVD by ADV Films .

The music in the series was composed by Masaki Kurihara. The band Oranges & Lemons played the opening song Soramimi Cake and the closing title Raspberry Heaven .

Video games

For the manga, three video games were released in Japan. The first, Azumanga Donjara Daiō ( あ ず ま ん が ド ン ジ ャ ラ 大王 ), was released on April 18, 2002 by Bandai and was a puzzle game for the PlayStation . December 2002 appeared with Azumanga Daiō Puzzle Bobble ( あ ず ま ん が 大王 パ ズ ル ボ ブ ル ) an arcade game from MOSS . The last, Azumanga Daiō Advance ( あ ず ま ん が 大王 ア ド バ ン ス ), was released on April 25, 2003 on King Records for the Game Boy Advance .
