Orthodox is a Spanish doom metal band founded in 2004 .

history

The singer and bassist Marco Serrato, the drummer Borja Vera and the guitarist Ricardo Jiménez founded Orthodox in 2004. Since its inception, the band has performed in the robes of the monks of Seville. The band wants to exclude individuality and focus the audience on the music through the masking and a lack of movement on the stage for the period of the performances. "The only aesthetic reference point are three immobile figures in black." The group did not wear costumes for later appearances.

The albums Grand Poder and Amanecer En Puerta Oscura appeared in the United States on Southern Lord . The Spanish company Alone Records acted as the European label from the start. The debut already received international recognition in the trade press. Rock and metal magazines such as The Wire, Rock-A-Rolla and Terrorizer discussed the album. In the following years the band played at international festivals such as Roadburn , Supersonic , Hellfest and the Kraak Festival . There were also support appearances for Scott Kelly , Voivod and Corrosion of Conformity .

style

The robes of the brotherhoods that celebrate their procession in Seville on Palm Sunday were Orthodox models for their stage costumes

music

Orthodox's debut album is based on classic Doom Metal by Black Sabbath and the more modern Doom derivatives by The Melvins , Earth and Sleep , later releases took influences from John Coltrane , Ornette Coleman , Ennio Morricone and thus expanded the style to an individual one Mixture of Fusion and Doom. The fourth studio album Ba'al again reinforced the original sound of the band and oriented itself back to classic Doom Metal.

Texts

Orthodox thematize predominantly occult content in a dispute with the predominant religion in the Spanish population. The Baptist socialized Marco Serrato Gallardo describes the main focus as a paganist perspective on Christianity:

“Christianism, paganism, and even magic have a big place in Orthodox. We offer a pagan vision of Christianism which brings some contradictions to the table, but also brings some light about other angles. There's a lot of recycled paganism under Christian make-up. So it is a more ambiguous thing than just being with or against something. "

Christianity , paganism and also magic have a great influence on Orthodox. We present a paganist view of Christianity, which brings some contradictions to the table, but also sheds some light on other views. There's a lot of recycled paganism under the Christian mask "
