Oscar Borchardt

Julius Moritz Oscar Borchardt (born November 2, 1845 in Berlin ; † October 20, 1917 there ) was a German lawyer.

Life

He was the second of four sons of the lawyer Siegfried Borchardt (1815–1880) and his wife Helene, b. Saling (1824-1899). His youngest brother was the painter Felix Borchardt . The family lived in the house on Französische Strasse 32 in Berlin's Friedrichstadt district . Borchardt studied law , did his doctorate and initially worked as a court assessor. In the mid-1870s he was active in the consular service of the Reich and made several trips abroad.

After the death of his father, who had already published a complete collection of the applicable exchange and trade laws of all countries in 1871 , he continued his work. From 1883 he published in R. v. Deckers Verlag published his multi-volume work The Current Trade Laws of the Globe , which was reprinted several times, further edited and translated into other languages. Borchardt died in 1917 and was buried in the family graveyard in the cemetery of the Dorotheenstadt and Friedrichswerder communities .

Houston Stewart Chamberlain , who was ten years his junior and who had met him in 1875 during a stay in Aarmühle, Switzerland , wrote about him in his memoirs: “It would be difficult for me if I wanted to list all the germs of future education that I would give to this Friends owe ”.
