OsiriX is software for displaying and processing radiological DICOM image data. It runs on the macOS operating system and was developed by the radiologist Antoine Rosset. It's 3D, 4D and 5D postprocessing and image fusion of positron emission tomography and CT data possible.

history

In the early 1990s, Osman Ratib dealt with the then young DICOM standard. He published the Osiris program as a shareware DICOM viewer. In 2003 he worked as Chairman at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and brought Antoine Rosset to Los Angeles for a one-year scholarship . There they developed OsiriX from scratch.

According to the manufacturer, 600,000 users worldwide work with OsiriX.

Since February 2015, the project has been changed from open source to commercial.

Motivation of the developers

The free software OsiriX offers similar possibilities for image processing as commercially available radiological postprocessing workstations; however, these cost between 30,000 and 150,000 euros.

OsiriX Foundation

In 2008 the OsiriX Foundation was founded. As a foundation, it should ensure the continuation of the project and the dissemination of the software and give the opportunity, for example, to employ doctoral students for further development.

Meetings

In 2005, 2006 and 2007 user meetings were held in Chicago ( RSNA ) and in 2008 in Vienna ( ECR ).

Apple offered OsiriX courses at RSNA 2007 and 2008, and Apple also held OsiriX training in Cupertino in September 2008 .

Scope of the software

OsiriX as a medical device

OsiriX can only be used for private use or for research purposes. Findings and diagnostics on patients are therefore not permitted.

In most industrialized countries, software for the diagnosis and post-processing of medical images is subject to regulatory control by the authorities or aid organizations of the same. In the EU, the Medical Device Directive 93/42 / EEC is relevant and in the USA an FDA 510 (k) premarket notification is required.

The company Pixmeo SARL provides users with a FDA and in the US and in the EU CE -gekennzeichnete version with support and documentation. The project was subjected to quality and risk management. In Germany, the software is classified as a class IIb medical product and can therefore be used for diagnostics on humans.

The company aycan Digital Systems GmbH provides users in the US and in the EU FDA and CE -gekennzeichnete version with support and documentation. This software is distributed in Austria by the company two-morrow dienstleistungs GmbH .
