Ostap Mychailowytsch Semerak (born June 27, 1972 in Lviv , Ukrainian SSR ) is a Ukrainian politician. From April 14, 2016 to August 29, 2019, he was Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine.

Life

Semerak was born in 1972 as the son of Mychailo Mychailowytsch Semerak (* 1940), head of the Faculty of Thermodynamics and Physics at the Lviv State Pedagogical University for the Safety of Life Functions and Stefanija Wassylijiwna (* 1948), an economist in Lviv, western Ukraine.

Between 1989 and 1994 Semerak studied physics at the Ivan Franko University in Lviv and was an active member of the student movement and a member of the Brotherhood of Lviv University. In 1990 he took part in the student hunger strike on Independence Square in Kiev . From 1992 to 1998 he studied political science at the Kiev Mohyla Academy , where he was co-founder and deputy chairman of the University Brotherhood.

In 1998 he was head of the secretariat of the parliamentary faction of the party reforms and order (Реформи і порядок, PRP) under party leader Viktor Pynsenyk . In March 1998, the PRP was a candidate for MP of the Verkhovna Rada and was a member of the budget committee at number 22 on the list . In 2002 he became head of the secretariat of the parliamentary group Our Ukraine and from 2005 on the same post for the reform and order party. From August 2006 to November 2007, Semerak was the deputy head of the Kiev state regional administration for domestic politics and public relations. On November 23, he became a member of the Verkhovna Rada for Blok Juliji Tymoshenko and remained so until December 12, 2012. In the parliamentary elections in Ukraine in 2012 , he unsuccessfully competed in 76th place on the list of the Fatherland party .

In the parliamentary elections in autumn 2014, he was again a member of parliament on list position 33 of the Popular Front party . From February 27, 2014 to December 2, 2014 he was Yatsenyuk Minister in the Cabinet of Ministers . After a cabinet reshuffle on April 14, 2016, he replaced Hanna Wronska , who had been acting provisionally since February 2016, as Minister for Ecology and Natural Resources in the Hrojsman cabinet .

Semerak is co-author of the book "The ABC of Ukrainian Politics". He is married to the doctor Oryzja Wolodymyrivna, who was born in 1974, and has a son and a daughter. His hobbies include Ukrainian musical arts, cars, and sports.
