The Ostermann-Arena , formerly Wilhelm-Dopatka-Halle , colloquially also circular sports hall , is a multi-purpose hall in the North Rhine-Westphalian city of Leverkusen . It is located on the Küppersteg part of Bismarckstrasse on the other side of the street from the BayArena . It is mainly used by various departments at TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen .
history
The hall was built in 1974 and at that time it was the second largest circular sports hall in Germany after the Rudi-Sedlmayer-Halle in Munich . It belongs to the Kurt-Rieß-Anlage , a sports park in Leverkusen. In February 2009 the hall was renamed the Smidt-Arena after the new sponsor , whereby the contract was extended by five years in 2014. According to its own information, it is Leverkusen's largest event hall.
Contrary to the demands of the parliamentary group of the citizens' list , demolition or sale of the hall for one euro is currently no longer planned, as the council of the city of Leverkusen has decided to keep it for the long term. In the meantime, the entrance area of the Smidt Arena has been modernized and the basketball hall has been converted into a party hall, which is used for carnival events, among other things.
After the takeover of the furniture store Smidt by the Ostermann company , a family business with interior and furniture stores, the hall bears the name Ostermann-Arena . The final decision on the renaming was made at a city council meeting on September 26, 2016. Since October 1, 2016 the hall has been called the Ostermann Arena .
Furnishing
The hall offers space for 3,500 visitors, 1,600 seats are permanently installed in the upper tier, all other parts of the grandstand can be installed variably. This means that the hall can be used very flexibly, i.e. it can be used for sporting events as well as for pop concerts, trade fairs, theater performances and exhibitions.
In addition to up to six cloakrooms and changing rooms with showers and toilets, a press room, sanitary facilities, kiosks and a VIP room are included in the building complex. The parking spaces in the vicinity offer space for 1,300 vehicles.
use
The hall is used by the volleyball and handball players of TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen and the second division basketball players of the Bayer Giants. The Bundesliga basketball team Bayer Giants Leverkusen played their home games in the Wilhelm-Dopatka-Halle. Furthermore, the arena has been the scene of numerous major events in recent years, such as the 1985 European basketball championship , the German Open in badminton and international professional boxing matches.
