Osthofen (desert)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Osthofen is a desert in the district of the town of Iphofen in the Lower Franconian district of Kitzingen . The settlement was probably abandoned in the 15th century. The reasons for this are unclear.

Geographical location

The exact location of the desert is unclear and can only be roughly traced today. What is certain is that they are in the east of the district must be in Iphofen. An old field name , which is no longer in use today, placed it in the valley of the Wehrbach between Iphofen and Poppenhof , Birklingen . The settlement was probably between the Steigerwald mountains Swan and Calf Mountain southwest of the Kirchbergleins.

history

The place name of the desert is typical of the Frankish colonization period between the 7th and 8th centuries. This is referred to by the ending -hofen , which, similar to Iphofen, is often found at this time. At that time, the new settlers in Main Franconia established royal courts that were surrounded by fron estates. This is how Iphofen came about. These goods were mostly named after the direction in which they were from the royal court . Maybe Osthofen was also a straggler in the naming.

Osthofen was first mentioned in 1407. The late first mention could be an indication of the later settlement of the place. At that time, were found in the Urbar of the Cistercian monastery Ebrach some vineyards (here rather the lat. Mark Iphofen in the "marchia Ypfehouen" court Mark calling). Among other things, vineyards near "Osthouen" were listed in the source. Since the settlement no longer appears in later times, it can be assumed that the village was abandoned in the 15th century.
