Ostrya chisosensis is a small tree belonging to the hop beech genus( Ostrya ). The natural range of the species is in Texas in the United States. According to R. Govaerts, however, the species is a synonym for Ostrya knowltonii Coville .
description
Ostrya chisosensis is a tree up to 12 meters high with an open and cylindrical crown. The bark is gray-brown and torn in vertical stripes. The twigs are sparse to loose, but not hairy with glands. The leaves have a hairy to bald, not glandular hairy stalk. The leaf blade is 3.5 to 5 inches long and 2 to 3 inches wide, broadly elliptical to elliptical-lanceolate, with a pointed or blunt tip, narrowly rounded to heart-shaped or wedge-shaped base and finely double-serrated leaf margin. The underside of the leaf is sparsely hairy, especially along the leaf veins .
The male inflorescences are 3 to 4 centimeters long, the female 0.8 to 1.5 centimeters long catkins . The fruit stands are 2 to 4 centimeters long and 1.5 to 2.5 centimeters in diameter. The bracts are 1 to 1.8 inches long and 0.5 to 1 inches wide. Ostrya chisosensis flowers in late spring.
Occurrence
The natural range of the species is in Texas in the United States. They are only found endemic in Big Bend National Park . Ostrya chisosensis grows along rivers and on moist slopes at altitudes of 1500 to 2300 meters.
Systematics
Ostrya chisosensis is a species of the hop beech genus ( Ostrya ). This is in the family of birch family (Betulaceae), the subfamily of coryloideae assigned (Coryloideae). The species was first described scientifically in 1965 by Donovan Stewart Correll . The generic name Ostrya comes from Latin and was already used by the Romans for the hop beech.
