Donovan Stewart Correll

Donovan "Don" Stewart Correll (born April 13, 1908 in Wilson , North Carolina , † March 28, 1983 in Miami , Florida ) was an American botanist . Correll was a specialist in orchids . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Correll ".

Life

Correll was born in North Carolina in 1908 and spent most of his youth there. After various activities in Florida and language and singing lessons, he began studying at Duke University . In 1934 he received his Bachelor of Arts there, and in 1936 his Master of Arts. In 1939 he completed his studies with a Ph.D. from. For his doctoral thesis he carried out research at Harvard University with Oakes Ames , who aroused his interest in botany.

In 1944 he worked for the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). This was followed by the draft for military service, where Correll served from 1944 to 1946 as a gunnery officer in the US Navy.

After the end of his service, Correll worked again from 1947 at the USDA. His work Native Orchids of North America North of Mexico appeared in 1950. Together with Oakes Ames, he published Orchids of Guatemala in two volumes in 1952 and 1953 . In 1956, the Department of Agriculture ended and Correll became head of the botanical division of the Texas Research Foundation. He published a work on Texan ferns . Another work on ferns followed in 1962, resulting from the collaboration with IW Knobloch . Together with Marshall C. Johnston from the University of Texas and other employees, the Manual of the Vascular Plants of Texas was created , which was published in 1970.

From 1971 to 1973 Correll was Program Director for Systematic Biology at the National Science Foundation . Then Correll moved to the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in Miami, where he researched the flora of the Bahamas with his wife Helen B. Correll and assistant Priscilla Fawcett. The work Flora of the Bahama Archipelago, Including the Turks and Caicos Islands , based on this work, was published in 1982. In the previous year, Correll had published Alaska Highway Adventure, a book about his own experiences as a botanist on the Alaska Highway in the 1940s.

Correll, who was a member of the Explorers Club and numerous botanical associations, died on March 28, 1983 after months of illness. He left behind his wife Helen Butts Correll (1907-?) And two sons and two daughters.

Honors

The Native Plant Society of Texas has presented the Donovan Stewart Correll Memorial Award every year since 1988 for scientific work in the field of flora in the US state of Texas . In honor of Correll, the genera Correllia A.M. Powell from the sunflower family (Asteraceae) and Correlliana D'Arcy from the primrose family (Primulaceae) were named.
