biography

Oswald Bühler was born in March 1899 as the second of four children and the eldest son of David Bühler and his wife Wilhelmina (née Marock). His father owned his own law firm as a legal agent and ran a debt collection agency. From 1930 to 1933 David Bühler was head of the Mauren community . Oswald Bühler, on the other hand, was later to follow in his father's footsteps not only professionally.

He attended elementary school in Mauren and the state school in Vaduz. Then he started working in his father's office. After his death in 1938 Oswald Bühler took over the firm. However, he was more interested in politics than in the law firm. At the age of 18, he had already joined the Progressive Citizens' Party (FBP). He took over his first public office in 1928. The FBP had just won the state elections after the savings bank scandal and filled important positions. The state parliament elected Oswald Bühler to the board of directors of the Sparkasse . Bühler held the office of secretary there until he left in 1954.

In 1939 he was elected to the state parliament for the Unterland constituency on the unified list of the Progressive Citizens' Party and the Fatherland Union . He was a member of it until 1945, from 1945 to 1949 he was deputy member and again from 1949 to 1957. In 1940 the state parliament elected him to the board of directors of the Lawenawerk . From 1944 until his death he was President of the Board of Directors of the Lawena State Works, and the Liechtenstein Power Plants that later emerged from it . He was also a member of the board of the Liechtenstein Red Cross from 1945 until his death .

In 1948 he successfully ran for the office of mayor of Mauren. Bühler was re-elected several times and held the office until his death. As head of the department, he was particularly committed to the expansion of the infrastructure in various building land assignments and road construction. His initiatives include the church renovation, the construction of the new schoolhouse with gym in Mauren and the construction of the schoolhouse in Schaanwald. Bühler was a member of the board of directors of Contina AG, which was the first industrial company to start operations in Mauren at the beginning of his tenure. In 1956 Prince Franz Josef II awarded him the title of Princely Commerce Councilor.

Bühler was a passionate hunter in his spare time. On December 8, 1962, he had an accident while hunting in Gamprin . He slipped on the lightly snow-covered and frozen ground and fell off a rock. He suffered a serious head injury. He died a short time later in Grabs hospital.

Bühler had been married since 1930 and had three children, a son and two daughters. His daughter Rita was married to Herbert Batliner until his death in June 2019 .
