Oswald Baer (ophthalmologist)

Oswald Friedrich Wilhelm Baer , actually called Baar Baer , (born April 2, 1847 in Lubin , Silesia ; † July 31, 1937 in Hirschberg ) was a German doctor , local researcher and author. He was a secret medical advisor and ophthalmologist in Hirschberg.

Life

Baer came from Silesia and was the only son of the surgeon Wilhelm Baer and his wife Caroline, née Seiler. Since his father served in the 5th Cuirassier Regiment, which took part in the campaign to Baden in 1849 and was then garrisoned in Hamm, Oswald Baer grew up in Hamm until 1852. The family only returned to Silesia after their father left the military. From 1857, Oswald Baer attended the community school there in Lüben, then switched to the Knight's Academy in Liegnitz, where he graduated from high school in 1865. He then studied medicine at the University of Wroclaw . He specialized in ophthalmology and after completing his studies initially worked as an assistant and secondary doctor until 1874. In 1878 Oswald Baer became a private surgical assistant at Professor Hermann Fischer's private clinic in Breslau. In 1888 Otto Baer settled in Hirschberg in the Giant Mountains, where he practiced as a specialist in ophthalmology. At the same time he was a contract doctor of the agricultural trade association. As such, he was appointed to the Secret Medical Council.

In his free time he wrote for the magazine Wanderer im Riesengebirge . He also gained fame through his book Mein Schlesien , published in 1924 . He was also a founding member and member of the main board of the Giant Mountains Association . He was jokingly called the Karkonosze Bear .

Oswald Baer married Marie Fischer in 1878, the sister of the private clinic owner Hermann Fischer and daughter of the superintendent Christ. Fisherman. The marriage remained childless.
