Oswald von Richthofen (diplomat, 1908)

Oswald Freiherr von Richthofen (born November 10, 1908 in Jena ; †  September 9, 1994 in Bonn ) was a German lawyer and diplomat .

Life

Baron von Richthofen was born in Jena in 1908 as the son of the lawyer Dieprand von Richthofen , later Vice President at the Imperial Court of Justice . He attended the humanistic Thomas School in Leipzig and then studied law at the University of Leipzig and Friedrich Wilhelms University in Berlin . He passed his state exams in 1930 and 1934 (after traineeship at the Dresden Higher Regional Court ). In 1935 he was accepted into the Foreign Service . He worked in Copenhagen, Budapest, Vienna and Calcutta. In 1943 he was drafted into the Wehrmacht and last served as a lieutenant .

In 1951, the Federal Republic took him over into the diplomatic service. His first stay abroad was as Counselor First Class in Dublin. From 1954 to 1955 he worked in Bonn. From 1955 to 1963 he headed the German representation (from 1959 embassy) in Djidda ( Saudi Arabia and Yemen ). From 1963 to 1965 he was ambassador to Khartoum ( Sudan ) and from 1966 to 1970 to Singapore . Foreign Minister Walter Scheel sent him early into temporary retirement in order to reduce the unfavorable age pyramid of the Foreign Ministry .
