Ottar Grønvik

Ottar Nicolai Grønvik (born October 21, 1916 in Kjelsås , Oslo ; † May 15, 2008 ibid) was a Norwegian German and Scandinavian medievalist , linguist and runologist .

Grønvik's parents came from the west and east of the country, so that this stimulated his interest in the culture and culture, the language and history of Norway. From 1935 to 1946 he studied German and Scandinavian and German linguistics at the University of Oslo . Due to the war, with imprisonment in 1943 for conspiratorial resistance campaigns against the German occupation and for helping Norwegian Jews to flee to Sweden, he was only able to take his master's degree after the end of the war - he had already written his master's thesis in 1942. From 1946 he worked at the University of Oslo as a research assistant at Carl Marstrander and from 1959 as a lecturer at the Institute for German Studies until his retirement in 1986. He did his doctorate in 1981 with a runological thesis on the inscription and interpretation of the rune stone by Tune .

After John Ole Askedal, Ottar Grønvik stood in the tradition of great Norwegian old Germanists and Scandinavians such as Sophus Bugge, Hjalmar Falk , Alf Torp and Carl Marstrander, along with other representatives of the field. The Norwegian tradition characterized that all old Germanic languages ​​are mastered and taken into account in connection with the rest of Indo-Germania. As a proven specialist in runology, he has earned an international reputation, which is reflected in his numerous contributions in national and international publications. Among other things, he contributed with Klaus Düwel and Wilhelm Heizmann and others on issues relating to the edition and, in particular, on the interpretation of the inscriptions of the golden bracteates of the Migration Period .

Ottar Grønvik received the Norwegian “Nansen Medal” for his scientific leadership and services. Since 1986 he has been a member of the Norwegian Academy of Sciences . He was married to Inger Grønvik and the couple have four children together.
