The Ottawa train station ( English Ottawa train station ; French Gare de Ottawa ) is the main station of the Canadian capital Ottawa .

Infrastructure

It is about 3 km west of downtown on Tremblay Road and replaced the old Ottawa Union Station in 1966 . In contrast to this, the new station is designed as a through station .

The station building was designed by John Cresswell Parkin as a concrete and steel structure in the international style . The design was awarded the Governor General's Prize for Architecture in 1967. In 1996 the building was recognized as a national cultural monument .

The building has a reception hall with ticket and baggage counters, first and second class waiting areas, a cafeteria , sanitary facilities and office space that is used by Via Rail and commercial tenants. The platform underpass to the through tracks can be reached via an escalator or barrier-free via a helical ramp . In addition, the house platform can be reached at ground level. The entrance area is spanned by a large canopy so that taxis , buses and private cars can be reached protected from the weather.

Railway systems

The station is on the junction of the Montreal – Ottawa , which comes from the east, and Ottawa – Toronto , which leads to the west. The two lines are connected by four through tracks, while three tracks end butt at the station. The tracks are accessible via two central platforms that are covered over their entire length and one also covered house platform . The station also has baggage platforms on all platforms . The people are platforms via escalators, ramps and elevators connected to the platform underpass.

rail

The station was originally planned as a so-called Union Station and was initially used by both the Canadian Pacific Railway and the Canadian National Railway . From 1978 passenger traffic was completely taken over by VIA Rail Canada , which has operated all long-distance trains since then . There are several daily intercity - Corridor compounds in the Canadian cities of Toronto (via Kingston ) and Montreal as well as some direct services to Quebec . While most train runs begin or end in Ottawa (possibly also in Fallowfield ), some connections between Toronto Union Station and Montreal Gare Centrale are tied through.

Street

[Obsolete] The station is located near the Ontario Highway 417 (referred to here as Queensway ) and is connected to the bus rapid transit network Transitway of the urban transport operator OC Transpo via the Train station. The Confederation Line tram has beenunder constructionhere since 2013 and isscheduled to go into operation in 2018.

Air France-KLM operates a regular bus service from the train station to Montreal-Trudeau Airport .
