from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Otterwald is a large contiguous forest near Memmingen . It also forms the border between the Roth and Günztal valleys and the Memminger dry valley . It lies east of Niederrieden and west of Günz an der Günz .

geography

The otter forest builds up like an island between the Roth and Günztal valleys. Its average height is 625 meters. At Eisenburg 675 meters and 620 meters in the north on the border. The roof is around 50 meters and only eight kilometers long. From Niederrieden to Boos , the western hills are steep and sharp, which is probably due to the Ice Age glaciers. Only one kilometer east of Niederrieden, the hill is already at 645 meters, i.e. 61 meters higher than the village. On the Sattelberg it reaches the highest point at 660 meters. The Otterwald has a steep eastern drop into the Wiesenbachtal, which is only 602 meters high.

history

The quartz-rich Otterbach attracted glassblowers to this area as early as the 17th century. A glass courtyard is mentioned as early as 1644. In 1705, Simon Fuchs, the master glazier of Ottobeuren , received permission to build a glassworks in the Otterwald and the right to clear the forest for a farm. He was to give the tithe to Ottobeuren. 1729 were confirmed from the glassworks. This suggests that the glassworks was economically very successful. Window glass was mainly produced there. Over 800 round panes were delivered to Ottobeuren for the construction of the monastery . When the glass distillery was no longer profitable, the master glassworker began to convert to a brickworks. This was auctioned off in 1845 and canceled. The entire Otterwald, until then still an Ottobeur dominant forest, fell in 1803 first to the Electorate of Bavaria , later to the Kingdom of Bavaria .
