Otto Bach (psychiatrist)

Otto Bach (born May 21, 1937 in Borsdorf ) is a German psychiatrist and neurologist .

Life

Bach grew up in Borsdorf. In 1955 he began studying medicine at the University of Leipzig , which he completed in 1960 with the state examination. This was followed by his doctorate in 1962. At the same time, he completed specialist training in psychiatry and neurology at the neurological clinic in Leipzig from 1961 to 1965. From 1965 he worked in the neurology / psychiatry department at the University of Leipzig as an assistant, specialist and senior physician. He completed his habilitation in 1975 with the work on cooperative relationships between psychiatric patients and their environment .

In 1979, Bach became a lecturer in psychiatry in Leipzig. From 1984 he worked for six months as an assistance professor at the Medical Center Gondar of the University of Addis Ababa in Ethiopia . In 1987 he was appointed full professor for neurology and psychiatry and director of the clinic and polyclinic for psychiatry and neurology at the Medical Academy in Dresden . Bach was chairman and board member in various professional societies and from 1991 to 1993 rector of the Medical Academy "Carl Gustav Carus" Dresden . From 1993 until his retirement in 2002, Bach worked as a professor of psychiatry at the University Hospital and the Medical Faculty of the TU Dresden.

The Festschrift for Rainer Tölle's 60th birthday, published in 1994, is preceded by a contribution by Otto Bach. Bach's socio-psychiatric commitment can be felt in this. Communication with the patient is only possible on his or her subjective level.

In 2014, Bach was awarded the Paracelsus Medal of the German Medical Association.
