Otto Berger (dentist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Otto Berger (born April 15, 1900 in Opole , † May 22, 1985 near Darmstadt ) was a Berlin dentist who helped those persecuted during the Nazi era and was honored as Righteous Among the Nations .

Among other things, Otto Berger had helped his Jewish dental colleague Fedor Bruck by keeping him hidden in his private or practice rooms from 1943 onwards. The Jewish dentist had received notification of his imminent deportation from the Jewish community in Berlin in October 1942 and has been in hiding ever since. He reported about it in 1964:

“I met Mr. Otto Berger in the spring of 1943. When he found out on this occasion that I was leading an illegal life as a racially persecuted person, he provided me with food at this first meeting and offered me to take me in. This case occurred a short time later and I moved into Otto Berger's apartment at the beginning of July 1943. "

Otto Berger didn't know at first that his protégé was a professional colleague. He also supported the head of the Jewish cemetery administration and the former head of the Jewish religious community.

Honors

In 1964, Berger was honored by the then mayor of Berlin, Willy Brandt , for his work as a “ rescuer of Jews ” and in 1974 invited by the Federal President to Bellevue Palace . In 2008 he was posthumously awarded the Ewald Harndt Medal by the Berlin Dental Association.

Otto Berger was awarded the title Righteous Among the Nations in October 2009 by the Israeli Yad Vashem memorial for his selfless commitment to the persecuted during the Nazi dictatorship .
