Otto Friedrich (lawyer)

Otto Friedrich (born July 6, 1883 in Molsheim , † June 21, 1978 in Heidelberg ) was a German senior church councilor and church lawyer .

Otto Friedrich was the son of the civil engineer Otto Friedrich (1851-1894) and Caroline, b. Beyler (1850-1904). He first attended the elementary school in Weißenburt in Alsace and until 1901 a secondary school in Strasbourg . Subsequently, he also completed training for the middle judicial service in Strasbourg until 1904. He made up his Abitur in 1906 and studied law in Strasbourg and Berlin . His state examination and his doctorate followed in Strasbourg between 1910 and 1912.

In 1919 he became City Councilor of the City of Karlsruhe and from 1924 Legal Advisor in the Upper Church Council of the Evangelical Church of Baden . In 1932 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the theological faculty of Heidelberg University , where he held a teaching position for Protestant church law from 1933 to 1953 . He then continued to work as an honorary professor at this faculty .

Friedrich published on canon law topics. His main work was The Introduction to Canon Law from 1961, which was published again in 1978 in a second revised and expanded edition. He also made contributions to the 2-volume Calw Church Lexicon (1941) and the 3-volume Evangelical Church Lexicon (ed. Göttingen 1956–1959).

Friedrich was married to the doctoral political scientist Helene Friedrich, born Rohde. There were three daughters and one son from the marriage.
