Otto I. (Bremen)
Archbishop Otto I of Bremen held office from 1344 until his death in 1348. His date of birth is not known.
Otto came from the Oldenburg Count House and was the youngest son of Count Christian III. von Oldenburg († 1285) and his wife Jutta von Bentheim .
At the Archbishopric of Bremen he worked as a canon from 1302 and as a thesaurarius ( chamberlain ) from 1323 . As dean of the cathedral under the episcopate Burchard Grelles , the first citizen of Bremen on the archbishop's chair , he is attested from 1331.
As his successor Otto is unanimously elected Archbishop of Bremen by the cathedral chapter on September 5, 1344, confirmed by Pope Clement VI on February 14, 1345 . him in this office.
At the time of his election Otto was at least 58 years old and weakened by illness. As a result, his nephew, Moritz von Oldenburg , himself a canon since 1337 and his successor as cathedral dean, was heavily involved in government affairs.
Otto's last documents were drawn up in January 1348. In the archbishopric feud of Bremen, a fight for his successor was fought with military force after the cathedral chapter elected his nephew, but Pope Clemens IV had appointed the previous Osnabrück bishop Gottfried von Arnsberg instead .
